As someone who read “Earth Abides” 20-25 years ago and remembers the book fondly, I was pleasantly surprised to see how the series was developed. When that happens, there is always a certain amount of trepidation because you hope they stay true to the book and live up to your visual expectations, knowing that it is difficult for a movie or TV show to live up to what you imagined when you read it. – With that in mind, I’m watching the first episode with a certain amount of bias, but I’m trying to see this movie as both “new” and “new”; history, and a nice reminder of one of my favorite books in the “Dystopian/Post Apocalyptic”; genre.
The setting is different from the book
The book was written and set in the 1940s, and the show is modern, so the technology and general “feel” are present. There’s room for a good pandemic story after Covid. The pacing is naturally brisk and especially fast-paced to match the character development and main plot of the first episode of the miniseries.
I’m looking forward to the rest
Episode 1 successfully builds an engaging story that seems to tie in with Stewart’s themes. It invites fans of the book and new viewers to ponder humanity’s place in a changed world. The acting is good so far, and the production and effects look decent, if a little sparse (expect car crashes, etc.).
